Trayvonostomy: Burning Down the House… Again

071713-national-trayvon-martin-protestThis is what happens when you mix one part bomb-throwing demagogue with three or four parts political opportunist and stir in a few thousand self-loathing people PO’d because they don’t have Brangelina’s hair.

Big Government:

On Tuesday night, a flash mob of some 40 to 50 teenagers invaded the busiest and most tourist-centric part of Hollywood, smashing windows, stealing cellphones, and assaulting passersby. The police described the incident as a “rolling crime wave.” One police official said that the George Zimmerman acquittal provided the flash point excuse for the flash mob. “They’re using Trayvon as an excuse,” the official said to local media. “They were saying, ‘Let’s go mess up Hollywood for Trayvon.’”

The incident began when 911 dispatchers began getting calls about trouble on Hollywood and Vine, including young people running through traffic, bowling people over, and grabbing their purses and cell phones. The hoodlums robbed local stores as they charged down Hollywood Blvd. One took a cash register. “They kept moving from location to location,” said Officer Christopher No. [more]

Let’s be clear: race-motivated rioting is as perennial to Los Angeles as fashion disasters at the Oscars, dating back to the Zoot Suit wars of the 1940s. It’s summer fun for people who can’t get to the beach.

For the politicians George Zimmerman is about guns. Tuesday night’s mischief was about straight-up pissed-off self-serving fun. It takes an on-the-make First AME Church pastor to make it anything else.

RRG Note: Hollywood is no longer rightfully my beat. I spent many years there turning over buses and drinking coffee ’til dawn at Duke’s Tropicana with the likes of Tom Waits and Ricki Lee Jones, or at Rock n’ Roll Denny’s with my old bud Captain Beefheart while he made desert sketches staring out on the logjam traffic of Sunset Boulevard.

But the gig belongs to my new friend and fellow Chandlerphile Gene Hackett at Blackmailers Don’t Shoot now. I’m too jaded by neon memories of lace-clad mammaries and Doc Marten boots to be of much use.

BTW you should drop in on him via the above link; he and the guys at The Other McCain do some serious writing I wish I’d picked up on a lot sooner. Ironically, I had read all of these people before but just didn’t connect them with their various blogs a sites. They are us—check them out.
