As usual, Barack Obama’s speech yesterday needs translation to cut through the frustrated black evangelist in Barry, so we’ll just work a few excerpts.
Eight years ago, I came here to deliver the commencement address for the class of 2005. Things were a little different back then. I didn’t have any gray hair, for example. Or a motorcade. I didn’t even have a teleprompter. It was my first big speech as your newest senator…
I didn’t even get my office unpacked before you guys recognized my genius and made me president. President! They actually pay me to do this job! I travel the world, ride in lims, sleep in late, party, give the same speech time-after-time, year-after-year, Mooch and I take separate vacations in our own private jets, and they pay me for this!
You see, I’d just spent a year traveling this state and listening to your stories – of proud Maytag workers losing their jobs when their plant moved down to Mexico; of teachers whose salaries weren’t keeping up …
Jobs are still way down, and prices are still way up, but the good news is you have me to tell you it’s getting better. Telling is what I do, dog.
In the period after World War II, a growing middle class was the engine of our prosperity. Whether you owned a company, swept its floors, or worked anywhere in between, this country offered you a basic…
Washington doled out bigger tax cuts to the rich and smaller minimum wage increases for the working poor. … Towards the end of those three decades, a housing bubble, credit cards, and a churning financial sector kept the economy artificially juiced up. But by the time I took office in 2009, the bubble had burst, costing millions of Americans their jobs, their homes, and their savings.
It’s still Bush’s fault.
Today, five years after the start of that Great Recession, America has fought its way back…. Together, we saved the auto industry, took on a broken health care system, and invested in new American technologies to reverse our addiction to foreign oil and double wind and solar power.
Gas prices will probably never be below $3.00 a gallon ever again; wind power kills more spotted owls a year than the logging industry could in a century. And we are so completely China’s punk on solar energy. Obamacare? Hahahahaha!
Together, we put in place tough new rules … and asking those at the top to pay a little more.
Meaning anyone who earns $40,000 a year or more.
Add it all up, and over the past 40 months, our businesses have created 7.2 million new jobs. … Just by virtue of our size and our natural resources and the talent of our people, America will remain a world power, and the majority of us will figure out how to get by.
Not the world power but, well… you know Sweden? And, by the way, unemployment will never be below 7.2 percent again; get used to it.
But I’m here today to tell you what you already know – we’re not there yet. … With an endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball.
Benghazi: mob instigated workplace violence; IRS targeting: didn’t happen… all that much; AP/Rosen: computer glitch; Fast & Furious: one itsy-bitsy border patrol agent and a couple hundred Mexicans? C’mon people! NSA data-mining: Trust me.
And, besides, the Republicans…
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
