Diane Sawyer, Steve Croft and Oprah Winfrey would skitter after him like a kitten romps after a ball of fuzzy red twine. He would be a twenty-first century Jack Abbott cause célèbre, the man everyone wants to say they’ve met.
And by the box office showings this weekend, they and a few of their liberal heroin-sniffing weekender friends are the only ones interested enough to see “The Fifth Estate“. The new Hollywood production lionizing this effete little alleged sex-offender and traitor to freedom bombed, big time.
Forty years ago Hollywood was making movies like “Chinatown” and “The French Connection” and, yes, even “Three Days of the Condor”. But, as artlessly liberal as Tinsel Town power brokers were even at that time, they would never have dreamed of making a film portraying Daniel Ellsberg as a hero of free speech, and in fact did not do so until 2003.
It was bad business, and as ignorant as we, the unwashed masses, are from Paducah to Palmdale, a buck is a buck.
Lost today, however, are those foundational principals that Hollywood once refused to sacrifice to artistic endeavor.
Benedict Cumberbatch says WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has a “strong moral purpose behind his actions.” But the actor, who plays Assange in Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, isn’t saying whether he thinks the prolific leaker of classified documents was in the right.
“I think the world needed to know,” Cumberbatch said during his cover shoot for the Sept. 20 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. “Whether it was right or wrong, I think only history and time will tell.” [more here]
And that moral purpose was? Why, furthering the cause of global jihad, silly.
Because what are right and wrong anyway? Just ethereal concepts. I mean, when you think about it, Hitler petted a dog once. Or something.
Hey, that’s ethereal, too. Or as that iconic sociopath director Quentin Tarantino said after 9-11, “9/11 didn’t affect me, because there’s, like, a Hong Kong movie that came out called ‘Purple Storm’ and it’s fantastic, a great action movie.”
By December 31, Hollywood execs will be pondering what went wrong that made The Fifth Estate do so poorly at the box office. That they tried to place a garland on the head of Evil most likely will not be among their probable conclusions.
