Um… Is Stoned in Colorado is Still Stoned?

smoking-potThis isn’t funny, but did we really need a study by Columbia University to tell us traffic deaths would escalate in the wake of states’ blitzkrieg to legalize pot?

CBS Seattle via Drudge:

SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – According to a recent study, fatal car crashes involving pot use have tripled in the U.S.

“Currently, one of nine drivers involved in fatal crashes would test positive for marijuana,” Dr. Guohua Li, director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia, and co-author of the study told HealthDay News.

Researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health gathered data from six states – California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia – that perform toxicology tests on drivers involved in fatal car accidents. This data included over 23,500 drivers that died within one hour of a crash between 1999 and 2010.

Li reported in the study that alcohol contributed to about 40 percent of traffic fatalities throughout the decade.

The researchers found that drugs played an increasing role in fatal traffic accidents. Drugged driving accounted for more than 28 percent of traffic deaths in 2010, which is 16 percent more than it was in 1999. [read more]

O-duh, huh?

Legalization of marijuana for medical purposes is an idea whose time is long overdue; but by prescription, regulated by the state and distributed through pharmacies. Blanket legalization or so-called “medical marijuana” dispensaries, such as California now has, is a fatal mistake.

Do a few Buds before bed on Sunday night and you’ll more than likely show up to work sober Monday morning.

But do some bud Sunday night and, well, beware motorists: do a lap around the beads before heading out on the road Monday mornings.

And bud smokers will show up stoned for work or school, assuming they don’t opt out for a munchies day. Yes, yes, this can all happen in states where marijuana is still illegal but it’s a math problem, figure it out—increased access will create higher highway casualties, work-related accidents, and lower student and worker productivity.

I’ll argue that decriminalizing marijuana is a good idea; marijuana smokers should not go to prison simply for being marijuana smokers. But legalization will open a Pandora’s box of societal nightmares.

As a regular guy and former liberal radical, I speak not without considerable experience on this subject.

Heard this morning that Missouri is next up on the list to legalize…

I don’t smoke MJ, even though I could ‘legally’ do so, due to me having MS. But IF I did smoke it, I would not drive… it’s a personal responsibility thing. 😉 But the amount of people out there who have no critical thinking skills, no personal responsibility and no concern for anyone other than themselves, is staggering… they drive, they vote and they reproduce. *shiver*

One of the reasons MJ seems to work so well for those with debilitating diseases is its long term effects, the same reason it is NOT a good party substance. Hey, I’ve used it but it is a dangerous substance.

My only issue with the study you’ve shown is that it was the mixture of alcohol and marijuana. I would like to see a study on drunk drivers as opposed to stoned drivers.

I tell you, I did read a study of drunk drivers v. texting drivers v. sleepy drivers. Would you believe that the texters (sexters?) lost? The sleepy heads came in second, and the drunks in third as the worst drivers.
