It’s a simple question. Are the American people just plan nuts?
This is a few days old but I’m just getting to it.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Medicare can no longer automatically deny coverage requests for sex reassignment surgeries, a federal board ruled Friday in a groundbreaking decision that recognizes the procedures are medically necessary for some people who don’t identify with their biological sex.
Ruling in favor of a 74-year-old transgender Army veteran whose request to have Medicare pay for her genital reconstruction was denied two years ago, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services review board said there was no justification for a three-decade-old agency rule excluding such surgeries from treatments covered by the national health program for the elderly and disabled.
“Sometimes I am asked aren’t I too old to have surgery. My answer is how old is too old?” the veteran, Denee Mallon, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, said in an email interview before the board issued its decision. “When people ask if I am too old, it feels like they are implying that it’s a ‘waste of money’ to operate at my age. But I could have an active life ahead of me for another 20 years. And I want to spend those years in congruence and not distress.” [read it here]
Oh, so now they get to veterans rights?
One has to wonder: What did these individuals do before medical science decided the Creator had goofed up and assigned some people the wrong body parts? And I will kill the first person who mentions Oscar Wilde.
Can you just hear transgendered grandparents a generation from now? Quit whining sonny boy! Why your grandmother remembers back in the day, when a boy had to be satisfied with just being a fruit.
Nutty Freudian bulls#!+ aside, the rationale that convinced anyone this is good government had to be implanted deep inside a departing Barney Frank logic bomb.
Look, the Constitution doesn’t speak specifically to gay or transgendered people so I suppose we have to live with the narcissistic theater every once in a while. But where does the big government insanity end?
And who appointed these board members, anyway, and from where do they derive their constitutional authority to spend taxpayer dollars this way? Or any way for that matter?
Every dime spent on Medicare—not to slight the fact that it is a big government boondoggle to begin with—should be allocated by strict congressional oversight. Someone—someone who has to face reelection—should have to specifically answer for these harebrained schemes.
I was going to say be sure to write your Republican senator or representative, but I keep forgetting that they are Republicans and in Washington.
