Barack and Peter Lemongello…

blog-obama-shrugNothing strikes me as news today. I mean, the world’s collapsing around an inept if not treasonous administration; Barack’s still playing golf while people are looking for jobs, or worse, dying from not being able to get into a VA hospital.

Situation Normal: FUBAR

Whenever I think of Barack Obama’s success story, I am reminded of Peter Lemongello.

Some of you won’t remember Peter, but he pulled off one of the great direct marketing coups of all time. In fact, in 1976 Peter was the first guy to ever direct market a record on television.

Here is a sample:

Yessiree! That’s Peter, out there with his Bobby Goldsburo helmet-do and his pastel leisure suits, crooning the snot out of people. (No, the RG did not wear anything remotely similar; this all happened deep into my ZZ Top Fandango incarnation).

But a lot of people thought Peter was the next Frank Sinatra, and some even found themselves saying, ‘I remember him! Dang! Where the heck has the Petester been hiding himself all this time?’

In reality, Peter was a second-rate Italian lounge singer from Jersey City, who apparently couldn’t get a godfather. But the ‘voice’ (small v) burned it up, there, for a while… Before, well, burning it down.

Real fame, the permanent kind, eluded Lemongello, but notoriety did not: In 1982 he was charged in Florida in an arson, fraud and bribery scam. Peter blamed it on his ‘fame,’ saying law enforcement singled him out because of his star status.

Okay, I don’t want to dog on Peter; you might stumble across him someday if you visit Branson, Missouri. But he does, in some abstract way, remind me of the Big O.

Both men were marketing geniuses who deftly used social media to gain fame and success.

Lemongello was an innovator with unremarkable talent who sold himself as someone he desperately wanted to be but was not.

Much like Lemongello, Barack Obama sold himself in the social media as well. But although the media remained wildly enamored with him, from the beginning Barack showed himself to be far, far, far out of his depth.

Of course, Barack didn’t burn down houses for profit and declare that he was persecuted because of his fame.

He let an embassy compound burn down, killing four Americans, covered up for political gain, and then hid behind charges that his detractors were racist.

I remember Lemongello…..was living in LA at the time of his big self-promotion. Occasionally have wondered what happened to him. the name was so unusual. I would never have made the connection with BO but, now that you have, it sure fits.

The excerpts in those ad spots were brilliantly done. The albums themselves not so much. Revolutionized direct marketing though.
