Last night I had a brief Twitter tête-à-tête with former talk show host and Palin documentarian John Ziegler. It seems Ziegler took exception to yesterday’s post, in which I linked Infowars’ Alex Jones‘ commentary about Matt Drudge’s efforts in pioneering citizen journalism. My post was almost a reblog, with the exception of a few goofy humorous comments my readers—all five four of you—have come to expect and love.
…and then linked to a video that he claims proves Drudge was in the tank for Obama in 2008, and that the late Andrew Breitbart (citizen journalist icon and former Drudge employee) confirmed it to him at the time.
Which seemed a little bizarre since he is the one who linked the video.
Before going further, I should say that I don’t know whether or not Drudge supported Obama. But I rather doubt that even he has the clout to persuade 50 million Americans to drink that much Kool-Aid. I do know, though, that during the 2008 Democratic primaries—when Drudge’s alleged transgressions occurred—a whole lot of conservatives were stupid enough to hope Barack would sink Hillary Clinton.
And, to our great misfortune and loss, we only have Ziegler’s word that Andrew Breitbart made these allegations.
None of that, however, was relevant to yesterday’s blog post, which simply hat tips Drudge for his work pioneering citizen journalism. Is Drudge a conservative? I have always assumed he was, but it’s irrelevant to any of my comments.
Without question Drudge was a BIG Thorn in the Clinton’s side during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and, as Jones points out, Dianne Feinstein and other liberals are not big fans.
What may be relevant, however, is that it seems every time someone dumps Ziegler, he does a trash job or hit piece on them. He was once a guest host for Drudge’s radio program, and then suddenly he wasn’t.
He produced the aforementioned, rather good, documentary on Sarah Palin, and when they dumped him for Stephen K. Bannon he wrote a hit piece on the Palins for TheDC. (Note: Before this, Ziegler had been a big Palin supporter, and organized protests at the CBS Late Night studios when David Letterman was maligning the Gov. and her family in his nightly monologues. Even at the time I remember thinking that Letterman might not be the only Palin-obsessed weirdo in that neighborhood.)
But Ziegler’s vitriol against anyone who offends his keen sensibilities doesn’t end there.
Earlier, in 2004, Ziegler’s NBA cheerleader girlfriend dumped him and he trashed her on air, which resulted in her filing a defamation lawsuit. She lost, not because Ziegler didn’t trash her, but because she was a public figure.
As far as conservative credentials, Ziegler’s seems a little spotty there, as well. He backed a Democrat buddy against Republican Rep. Ann Northrup in Kentucky in 2006.
In fact, reviewing Ziegler’s record, no one seems to want him around very long after, well, he’s around very long.
Except, John, almost nobody knew who you were before these people allowed you to associate yourself with their celebrity. And when the axes keep falling on friends, acquaintances and colleagues who’ve given you the biggest breaks of your career, maybe it’s time to take a good long look within.
