This month’s revelation that the administration intends to ban AR-15 ammunition should come as no surprise. Many gun outlets haven’t been able to stock it in any significant quantities for a couple of years now.
But the nation’s first out-of-the-closet Marxist president doesn’t need to be overwhelmingly successful in banning guns and ammunition.
In two years, his ATF will be another president’s ATF, and regardless of that president’s political affiliation, the agency will continue to whittle away at our Second Amendment freedoms practically unabated.
Any conservative wondering how our government acquired the surfeit regulatory powers never intended by the framers of our Constitution, need look no further than the Republicans he or she has been voting for all of these years.
George Bush the Elder signed a huge “assault weapons” ban in the late 1980s, with the help of Congressional Republicans, and sent me a nice form letter attached to 30 pages of irrelevant statistics explaining why. I also received an invitation to lunch from that doofus Dan Quayle, but I digress.
Over the last century the ATF has morphed from a small revenue-collecting arm of the Treasury Department into something very different; it began targeting whiskey runners and now concentrates on keeping guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.
That the result of decades of clever Democrat fiat and Republican “bipartisanship.” (Anytime you hear “bipartisan” and “firearms” in the same sentence, quickly rush out and stock up on guns and ammo.)
If the ATF spent nearly as much time closing down Pakistani cigarette and liquor stores, al Qaeda would go bankrupt overnight. I’m only slightly exaggerating.
And the same can be said for many of the most intrusive and abusive agencies within our government.
If we could have raised the roof on the last Bush administration’s State Department alone, the Islamist infiltrators working there would have made Alger Hiss and Walter Kendall Meyers look like Young Republicans.
Richard Nixon transformed the EPA from a powerless little mouse hole in the corner of some cellar in the Washington bureaucratic labyrinth into the regulatory leviathan it is today.
We all know how Mitt Romney created RomneyCare, the model for ObamaCare, from an idea originally floated by a conservative think tank.
But again I digress.
How does a brand new department of the government get the power, or the budget, for that matter, to buy 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition, enough to send the market into a glut? A cabinet-level department created by a Republican in the hysterical aftermath of 9-11?
We could go on: the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, Immigration? Don’t get me started.
None of this means that skeet shooting enthusiast Barry Obama is not a clear and present danger to our republic, you understand. He should have been impeached four or five years ago for malfeasance, if nothing more.
But the greater danger, in the long-term, is electing establishment Republicans who love the power of creating and funding bureaus and agencies and the myriad regulations they use to intrude into our daily lives.
They love that power more than they love the Constitution designed expressly to restrain it.
