Trump: When He Didn’t Say What He Just Said…

Real estate developer Donald Trump, gestures during a news conference with the PGA in New YorkI’m not a Trump 2016 guy, but sometimes it’s really hard not to be. I am personally convinced that, once elected (if that were even possible, and it probably isn’t), The Donald would be the biggest RINO since Karl Rove bought his first pocket caddy.

But you have to admire the way Trump has drawn in conservatives, and the way he sidesteps, dodges, weaves and downright lies when the sidestepping, verbal cavorting and contorting catch up with him.

Not even the New York Times can rewrite history faster than Trump on a bad day. And his minions never seem to care…

He seems so… regular, and you just know he is making establishment leaders’ and media hacks’ heads explode trying to torpedo his campaign. And, after all, isn’t that what it is mostly about for Trump supporters?

Both Ann Althouse and Jim Teacher ran with this today.

…This is an old standby in political coverage, as long as the candidate isn’t a Democrat. The Republican is responsible for everything every single one of his supporters says…

He didn’t correct the random guy who blurted out something he wasn’t supposed to! Have you ever heard of such a thing in your life? This will finally convince people who think Trump would be a good president that they’re wrong…

This whole game is dumb and dishonest for yet another reason, as novelist Andrew Klavan points out:

… when a man in the crowd asked the first question like this: “We have a problem in this country. It’s called Muslims. You know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American. We have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That’s my question, when can we get rid of them?”

The failure to correct is now the subject of outrage. Is the outrage justified? Probably. Trump saw and used a tricky way to signal to a certain subgroup and to make them think he might be on their side. All the while, he preserved the ability to say I didn’t agree. I made fun of him!

But Trump has fed on this kind of outrage. He’s a clever communicator who knows how to work in a swirl of verbal energy. He lets other people talk and he says things that make for greater fun and excitement. Those who express outrage are just as useful in his game as the guy in the crowd who unleashed a torrent of crazy…

The word has gone out to everyone from Fox News to Nick at Night to GET TRUMP, whatever it takes. You know this is happening whenever Dana Perino goes into pre-programmed RNC robocall mode. Just kidding…

But the fact is that GOP leaders have brought this misery to their own doorstep. For decades they have been cutting backroom deals and dealing from the bottom of the deck, as we all saw during the 2014 race in Mississippi, where they deceptively enlisted Democrat voters to vote against the Tea Party candidate.

Neither is it surprising that media elitists, who would rather see a quantifiable dope head the GOP ticket, resort to what amounts to a kind of “evidence of absence” meme to discredit Trump when he is clever enough to sidestep a minefield like this one.

I don’t like Donald Trump. I think he can do serious damage to Republicans’ chances in 2016.

But it is certainly not difficult to understand why many conservative-base voters are attracted to him.
