The horrible crash at Oklahoma State University yesterday has claimed the life of another victim, this one a two-year-old child. Four more parade-goers remain critical and a dozen or so are in serious condition.
I know this is Golf Weekend, but we haven’t heard President Obama call for sweeping new legislation so we can keep automobiles out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.
Could it be that our liberal moral and ethical betters haven’t noticed that there are an average 35,000 automobile deaths annually, roughly the same number as firearms deaths? Or that irresponsible, senseless and even crazy people still manage to gain access to cars.
After all of the efforts to regulate, establish rules of the road, and increase DUI penalties.
Still, it seems more should be done. I mean, it feels right. Right? Maybe our focus should be on manufactures who have not done enough to end alcohol-related highway deaths.
Maybe a bartender should have cut off the alleged driver of this vehicle before those last three drinks, or perhaps family members or friends could have staged an intervention that would have brought her to her senses before she wrecked havoc on lives other than her own.
Surely more can be done to prevent tragedies like this in the future.
After all, they encourage driving.
