Dead Soldiers: Lost in the Shuffle?

Have you ever considered how little we hear of POWs and MIAs from Iraq and Afghanistan, and those who are later recovered KIA?

Maybe this is one reason why.

WASHINGTON –  Sen. Claire McCaskill is pressing the Pentagon for answers following reports — and an admission by the U.S. Department of Defense — that it staged “arrival ceremonies” for fallen soldiers.

“This is even more evidence that these recovery efforts are suffering from systematic problems and a lack of coordinated leadership,” McCaskill said in a statement. “Families in this community just want officials to be honest and forthright about the government’s efforts – instead, what they’re often getting is false hope and fake ceremonies.”

Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Accounting Command — a unit in the Defense Department — has been holding arrival ceremonies for seven years, with flag-draped coffins being carried off cargo planes as though they held the remains of American troops that had just been returned, according to an initial investigation by NBC News. However, the remains typically were on site before each ceremony began, at a lab where they were undergoing analysis. The report focused on ceremonies at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. [read here]

And the planes couldn’t even fly!

This is what I’m saying. When a government becomes so bloated, so entangled in red tape, that it cannot properly honor its heroes and their families, the scythe should cut deep into the bureaucratic deadwood and heads should be lopped.

One may wonder why the DoD would be holding the remains of these returning heroes for prolonged periods, and it is a valid concern, but what is incomprehensible is that the Pentagon would fail to inform families that they’re loved ones are not in those flag-draped caskets.

The “new Pentagon” has been more than sensitive to the recruitment of Muslims and have bent over backwards to make gays welcome; they have supported atheists’ efforts to persecute Christians. And now, apparently, the remains our fallen heroes have become mere details to be overlooked. Oops, we forgot the body.

The deception by our government of these families, and the mistreatment of heroes who have paid the ultimate price, is despicable. Nothing is quite so precious as a life given in service of one’s country, and our fallen and their families should be given the highest honor for their sacrifice.
