Russians: What the Puck?
This morning, I was all set to do something homophobic, like pointing out that Johnny Weir is still out of the closet, when out of the blue Johnny Weir’s silly exhibitions at the Sochi Games didn’t matter any more.
This was about an American hockey player named T.J. Oshie becoming the breakout star of the 2014 Games in Sochi with a performance that instantly becomes a national classic.
One time after another and six times in all, this admirable but heretofore largely unknown winger for the NHL’s Blues picked up the puck for his country on his adversary’s home soil, and four times he succeeded in this ultimate one-on-competition against reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky.
He did it with a smile on his face, with what looked to be an innocent grin from a 12-year-old out on the pond imagining his big moment, and with unmistaken confidence in himself and in the moment(s). [NY Post]
Of course sports journalists everywhere were quick to call T.J. Oshie a hero, and Oshie was quick to point out how ridiculously inane it is to call an athlete a hero.
But yes, the U.S. won the ice hockey competition against Russia at Sochi and NBC’s otherwise meaningless presence on this planet was momentarily justified.
And, as always, the Russians were as magnanimous in defeat as they are in victory.
BTW: If you don’t see Sergei Bobrovsky at the pub for a while, he probably just has the sniffles. Russia doesn’t have gulags anymore. That is just bourgeois Western propaganda.

Thank you again my friend for highlighting my Blog Announcement. I hope that someone will value the effort and snark that went into the creation of both blogs and will step up rather than seeing them remain dark and stale. I’m hardly the most well known or highly trafficed blogs out there so I can understand the reticence to act (as well as my personal legacy) so I am not really surprized by the lack of takers.
