UPDATE
Okay, this is controversial, and with all the PC insanity going around nowadays it’s difficult impossible to know where one has crossed the heretofore clearly acknowledged and demarcated lines about racism.
It seems that even commenting on someone else’s controversial comments regarding race can get you branded as a racist.
But here goes.
Apparently, Dallas Maverick’s owner and *dumb guy who got really lucky in the 1990s, Mark Cuban, may have crossed one of those invisible lines and gotten in trouble with the arbiters of all things racist, the state-run media.
CNBC:
Mark Cuban strongly rejected suggestions he’s a racist, and accused critics of taking his controversial comments on race out of context. He did, however, apologize for one of the examples he used when admitting he has prejudices.
In an on-stage interview for the GrowCo conference in Nashville, the Dallas Mavericks owner said: “If I see a black kid in a hoodie at night … on the same side of the street, I’m probably going to walk to the other side of the street.” He added that he would also cross the street to avoid “a white guy with a shaved head and lots of tattoos.”
But, he continued, “Other than safety issues, I try to always catch my prejudices and recognize and be very self-aware that my stream of thought is never perfect and I’ve got to be careful. To me, that’s part of growing up and what I try to instill in my kids.” …
Thus the justification for my allegation that Mark Cuban is a *dumb guy who got really lucky.
Cuban went on to compound the potential firestorm over his comments by adding:
… “someone is going to take this as a media thing,” Cuban added what he called a qualification. “I think we’re all bigots. I don’t think there’s any question about that.”
But as his father taught him, he added, “of everything and anything you possibly can do, treating anyone differently for race, religion, or any other reason, is wrong. But that doesn’t mean you’re not going to have those thoughts from time to time. … You’ve got to realize when you have those thoughts, they’re wrong.”
Etc. etc. etc.
Dumb.
But another subject for another day.
The question is, is Cuban a racist?
Well, I don’t know.
There was a time in the unfortunate and not too distant past, in some parts of this great nation, when it was not considered at all racist to acknowledge being afraid of men in hoods. Bald guys have always been spooky to me.
So might it be that nowadays just being honest is dangerous? Cuban’s honesty has certainly gotten him in trouble.
The point being, that in the current politically correct climate one cannot always know.
One is not supposed to know.
One has to wait for someone else to decide.
Until then, one is supposed to be frightened, uncertain whether to zig or zag for fear of being ostracized from society by one’s moral and intellectual superiors.
They’ll get back to you, if you have taken your First Amendment rights too far, and gone and offended someone.
Perhaps, if you are white, the safest bet is to just (as Cuban finally suggests) admit that being racist is a given.
You’ll do better after you’ve returned from reeducation camp.

I personally don’t like Mark Cuban, but for sure, he isn’t stupid. He might have caught a lucky break here and there, but dumb asses don’t amass a Billion dollar fortune.
And boy am I glad I didn’t say the same thing about an African American billionaire. Because the point was…
I think Mark Cuban is one of those extroverts who gets a perverse kick out of sticking his foot straight in the dookie pile. Kind of like a certain blogger we all read.

Cuban should have stuck with his original statement and kept going. I am a Black woman living in NYC and I do a double take even going so far as to cross the street myself at times when I see anyone wearing a hoodie with the hood up over their heads and their faces barely visible. That goes for Blacks, Latinos, Vietnamese, Pakistanis, male, female, head bangers, gang bangers, whomever because wearing a hoodie in such a fashion is a dog whistle for “watch your back” or as they say in some circles, “you’re about to get jacked.”
I do not believe that many people thought of Trayvon Martin until Cuban brought him up. Talk about foot in mouth.
I couldn’t agree more. Anyone would, or dang well should, respect a situation like that if they want to remain among the living. Thanks for the comment.
